Fossil fuels seem to be the forbidden fruit in the garden of eden. We have bitten from the apple and our downfall is assured.

There is an interesting piece on apocalypticism here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/apocalypse/explanation/worldview.html

What you have to have to generate an apocalypse, is a sense that this world is out of joint, and that we had better look to a different world if we want to be saved....

Mat, were the Nazis really so irrational given their goal of an autarkic superpower Germany?

Adam Tooze's The Wages of Destruction points out that much of the Nazis' mass murder was driven by Malthusian considerations...

Is greed for carbon-tax revenue a reason why so many environmentalists opposed the most obvious way (nuclear energy) to actually make big cuts in CO2 emissions?

And could one of the root causes of this greed for taxes be the need to create vast numbers of make-work jobs to compensate for the loss of industry in Western countries which resulted from "Made in China"?

Global Warming Alarmism has all the earmarks of an over leveraged investment. 2007 seems the high mark for the true believers...they re-emphasized the worst of the IPCC predictions. Yet, two years later..."Hurricane Bill" alternatively described as worsening to a Cat4 or Cat5 ended up Cat1 and missing almost everything.

How many times can these guys promise a Towering Inferno or Poseidon Adventure and fail to deliver? I notice that their more moderate followers -- the Greens hoping that all this would build them a bureaucracy so they could ply their trade for the next decades, living high on CO2 taxes, have backed off and rarely mention the IPCC and Gore any more! It's like a high tech company that hides the founder with the beard and sandals so it doesn't tarnish their business image.

The "Greens" want to write articles about why we should drive battery cars (all the while Toyota is saying their unworkable) and ride mass transit and live in tiny concrete condos with exorbitant walkability fees. They want to rope us into projects that cannot be easily scraped and taxes that won't be cut so they can sit in cubicles and blog about "Being Green" all day long.

But like Madoff, they promised big returns to their investors...their followers...and every day more people are knocking on the door saying "where's the money, Al"...

Brilliant and, I must say, profound! You write with clarity and, at the same time, a trenchancy (?!) that one continues to look for but rarely finds. The subject here, of course, is what Nietzche termed european nihilism and the malaise of inadaquacy, before this complex, difficult but inevitably beautiful world. I salute your perspicacity.

The thing is though, for me Deep Ecology is number 1 on my hit list of evil ideologies, but Objectivism is number 2. Fascists are at number 3, genocidal religious bigots (chiefly takfiri Islamists and extreme Islam-haters currently) at number 4 and Stalinists at number 5.

Kingsnorth the Witch Doctor, Monbiot the Atilla ?

«A man's method of using his consciousness determines his method of survival. The three contestants are Attila, the Witch Doctor and the Producer--or the man of force, the man of feelings, the man of reason--or the brut, the mystic, the thinker.»
- Ayn Rand
